Had a look at some 2015 Silverado HDs the other day with my dad since he’s looking at upgrading from his 2013. While checking out the exterior I noticed that the fucktards at GM still haven’t put the DEF tanks in a better spot.

Kinja'd!!!

How stupid are the people at GM? Who’s the idiot who signs off on these designs?

I mean just look at how low and exposed that PLASTIC tank is. That’s just asking for it to get broken. Think of people who work for logging companies, they’re going to smash and scrape the shit out of that thing going back in those forests.

The frame actually comes down farther than the DEF tank

That entire truck has way too much chrome on it. A bare bones truck is the way to go for heavy duty applications.

Why would he get one of the GM's when it is severely outclassed by the Ford and Ram?

What's a DEF tank? I agree with you though. Anything that low below the frame is gonna get damaged.

I don't work for GM but I've delt with DEF and it's kind of astonishing that this was deemed an acceptable location. You can easily see it in profile. Why they didn't integrate it with the fuel tank or at least package it next to the fuel tank is what kills me. Especially since their DEF fill is right behind the fuel door.

Simple solution: Buy a Ford.

Why does he want to upgrade already? There's not much capability difference between a 2013 and the 2014+ gm trucks, and while the interior is notably better, it still isn't up to Ram and Ford's level, plastic tactile quality notwithstanding since presumably this would be used for actual work.

Convince him to wait another year or two: Ford will have a new Super Duty, GM may have switched to aluminum, and Ram, well, they already are on a different upgrade cycle.

Yeah I was surprised to see them have it there. It's been in that spot since the beginning of the previous gen in 07/08. You have to go under the hood to fill the DEF tanks in these, RAM/Ford have the convenient fill behind the fuel door.

He wants to get one with more options like the nav/camera, sunroof, etc. He says he needs a little more luxury since this doubles as his DD/work truck.

Trying to lift my old boss’s 13 or so Duramax with the four post lift, I accidently bumped the DEF tank with the one post and put a small crack in it. He didn’t care, I think it was replaced under warranty

I wouldn’t have an issue with the location of the tank of GM put some skid plates on right at the factory.

Also, it doesn’t matter what Ford or RAM is offering he won’t even look at them (he’s a stupid Chevy fanboy). He says all RAMs are good for is making noise. He fails to realize that Ford/RAM both have about a 100lb-ft of torque advantage over the Duramax.

Kinja'd!!!0

Fair enough, and I'd want the same thing in my DD (the moonroof and camera, anyway). Has he looked into aftermarket or dealer-installed options for those rather than a new truck? Especially since he'll likely be taking a hit on the trade-in on the old truck, and the new truck will have its own depreciation as well, despite "money on the hood" offers.

Kinja'd!!! AM > boxrocket
04/26/2015 at 10:26

Kinja'd!!!1

I don't think he's looked at anything like that. To tell the truth, I think he just wants to trade for the extra feautures and because he likes the styling of the new gen better than his (which I disagree with, the new ones are ugly).

Kinja'd!!! boxrocket > AM
04/26/2015 at 10:37

Kinja'd!!!0

The new ones are a hodgepodge of different designs all slapped crudely together. It screams "committee design!" in the worst way, like the new impala, lacrosse, corvette, malibu, tahoe, suburban, yukon, escalade, etc. The front of the Silverado is almost likeable, and I appreciate that it hearkens back to a "glory days" era for gm's trucks, the late '80s to early '90s, but the rest of the truck looks like someone decided the truck was too blocky/chunky and decided to hack off corners (tail lights, rear windows, most notably) to offset that look. The sierra is just, well, bad. With the LED running lights it looks like someone put glitter on a pig's eyelashes then took a picture of the surprised animal with a bright flash for reference.

Kinja'd!!! boxrocket > AM
04/26/2015 at 10:41

Kinja'd!!!0

Inform him that the Duramax is a Japanese (Isuzu) engine, see if his feelings change, haha.

It's too bad he isn't shopping around. None of the "Big Three" make a bad truck, it's just certain ones have certain advantages over the other, and competition is great for the consumer. I've driven too many miles in too many trucks to ever personally consider anything but a Ford, but I appreciate what Ram and gm are making, especially if it means Ford stays on their toes. More the pity that Toyota and Nissan can't or won't make a HD truck.

Kinja'd!!! AM > boxrocket
04/26/2015 at 10:42

Kinja'd!!!0

The thing is that I actually like most of their lineup but the 2 full-size trucks are such a turn off. I find that the 2007-2013 trucks look so much better with their smooth, plain panels. The design on them blends together to rather than the different bits-and-pieces design they have going now.

Kinja'd!!! AM > boxrocket
04/26/2015 at 10:46

Kinja'd!!!0

I find the Cummins is the best motor of the Big 3 but something about the strength of the Ford’s body and frame is just amazing. And to be fair Chevy does have the best transmission though, Allison really knows what they’re doing. Also, the RAMs interior is generally a nice place to be which is something you don’t usually see in this class of trucks. Much nicer than the Ford and Chevy that’s for sure.

Nissan has that new Titan Diesel but it's not a competitor with the big boy trucks that the American companies offer.

Seems I hear this pretty often from die-hard truck guys: Dodge's Cummins diesel and GM's Allison transmission put into Ford's HD trucks would make for the best HD truck.

Me personally, I've always liked the GM trucks, at least from a design point. While Ford and Dodge are going all "Big Rig Freightliner + Tonka truck", GM's trucks at least have clean designs that just look like trucks.

I'm really interested in the new Silverado, but I don't want to spend $35k+ on a truck just to have it start rusting in 5-10 years (goddamn salt). I really like that Ford's body is aluminum and I'd be super tempted to get into one of them, but I think it's such a fucking ugly truck that no matter how good it drove and held up, I'm not spending that much money on something that damn ugly.

Since Ford switching to aluminum has GM fast-tracking their switch to aluminum by a few years (I believe I heard it's now 2017 or something), I guess I'll just keep waiting to see what they come up with. My current truck ('03 ZR2 bought in '06) has been reliable and I haven't had to make any payments on it for about 5 years now, so I can't really complain. It's just starting to rust (as they all do) and I'm ready for something different, new, and roomier inside.

So they require new trucks to run this DEF stuff now? Is it a state thing or federal?

Kinja'd!!! AM > QCGoose
04/26/2015 at 12:45

Kinja'd!!!0

The rust is unavoidable in these old steel trucks :( I’ve noticed a couple little specs of rust on mine as well. However, I do undercoat it every year and wash it just about every other day when the salt is out.

Kinja'd!!! AM > MysticStick
04/26/2015 at 12:48

Kinja'd!!!0

It's a federal thing. It’s pretty much just for better emissions. Basically it makes it so the trucks/cars aren’t pouring high levels of chemicals and black smoke everywhere like they used to. Instead they release cleaner and less-harmful emissions into the air.

Kinja'd!!! QCGoose > AM
04/26/2015 at 12:53

Kinja'd!!!0

That's definitely what I need to do and will do with the next truck. I was pretty adamant about washing my ZR2 all the time when it was newer, but admittedly I slacked and got lazier about it the older it got. But even then, it seems no matter what, the S10's rear cab corners are just prone to rusting out.

Kinja'd!!! AM > QCGoose
04/26/2015 at 12:56

I make sure that it’s always done because I’ve never seen another Yukon for sale that was in as good of a condition as mine. Also, rocker panels are always the first thing to go on these SUVs.

Kinja'd!!!0

Because the frame/engine/transmission/everything not body and interior are exactly the same as his 2013. GM redid everything on the old trucks except the exterior and inteior designs back in 2011 and were waiting to get a full life out of it before they redid it. I’d imagine in a year or two they’ll update it and move it by the fuel tank and put the filler cap behind the fuel door.

Plus, I know someone with a 2011 2500 diesel who uses his truck like a truck (logging, like you used as an example) and his DEF tank has nothing more than a few scrapes on it. Have the optional protection plate put on it if you're that damn concerned about it.

Kinja'd!!! AM > Logansteno: Bought a VW?

You’re failing to see my point though. What I’m saying is that someone gave this tank location the “ok” when anyone smart would have said move it or cover it. Then they go and refresh the look of the truck, add new wheels, etc. but someone still doesn't feel this is a bad spot to have a plastic tank. This would have never been signed off on if this was RAM or Ford.
